Born in Austin and a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Pete, became Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (CADAC) in 1985 For the past 30+ years Pete has has maintained his licensure. Pete was a consulting member of the Consultant Exchange Data Base (CEDB) of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) of SAMSHA for nearly two decades and has consulted in the prevention field for the last 10 years.

Consultant-Educator-Inventor: Pete is an educator and motivational presenter who founded founded the Pedro Gatos Institute on Addiction, Health & Social Theory in 1998. Pete is an educator and motivational presenter. In addition to the 10 years as an adjunct faculty member teaching college level classes at the Austin Community College on pharmacology, addiction theory and personal growth, he has facilitated well over 50 professional CEU workshops in the field of addictive studies and human brain and body health over the last 28 years, including nationally well received marijuana focused workshops at the 2013, 2014 & 2016 Annual NAADAC Conference in Atlanta, Seattle and Minneapolis respectively. He is licensed by the State and has taught hundreds of CJS mandated AOD classes for Travis County.
Pete is author of a cutting edge 8hr (3-session) Cannabis Intervention curriculum that began piloting in November 2012 at Travis County Counseling & Education Services (TCCES) 8hr Marijuana Intervention curriculum that began piloting in November 2012 which, as of January 2018, has served over 3,500 Austin, Texas CJS clients, many of them young (age 17-21). Pete hosts an Austin weekly Community Radio news program, ‘Bringing Light Into Darkness’
Work History: Pete retired from fulltime employment with the Travis County Justice System in 2006 after a 24 year career, the last 18 years of which were in a managerial and clinical supervisory capacity for the County’s substance abuse counseling program. Pete was the major actor in developing and evolving the AOD assessment protocol used to assess thousands of offenders for the Travis County judges each year within the Travis County criminal justice system during his tenure.
Inventor: Pete is the inventor of a patented Alcohol & other Drug (AOD) assessment process granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and issued on April 8, 2003. The Invention name is - A Method for Assessing the Severity of Non-Addictive and Addictive Psychoactive Chemical Relationships - (Patent number; US 6,543,454 B1).
