I am an Accidental Teacher. I became a teacher because I wanted to help my multi-labeled, gifted son, Matt Rutherford. My degree is in Gifted Ed., however I have taught in Title 1 schools, rich schools, inner-city schools, and in various GT roles. My presentation will be a tour of raising a very unique son, Captain Matt -- who did not learn to read until 5th grade and, yet, he taught 4 courses to his peers in high school. Matt became a self-taught, world-record sailor and now runs his own non-profit called Ocean Research Project.org. This presentation may make you laugh, and it may make you tear up. Anyone who struggles with either parenting or teaching unique, gifted students, will walk out of the workshop feeling better about helping that child to bring out his/her personal best!
