Using a Mentor Text to Engage in Multimodal Literacy

"We would like to demonstrate how a mentor text can be used to engage students in multimodal literacy. Throughout the year, our goal is for the class to participate in meaningful, student-led, student-centered conversations about various texts. In our classrooms, we also want to limit the amount of the common teacher discourse practice of IRE (Initiate, Respond, Evaluate) which relies on excessive 'teacher talk.' We would like to show you how students use language for classroom collaboration to have student-led conversations about a mentor text they have read and annotated. Our students track their participation and evaluate their participation weekly with an interactive classroom reflection. We will also share how you can use mentor texts as a model for student writing."

I have 26 years of experience in education. I have been an ELA teacher for most of my career. Last year, I served as an instructional coach in PfISD, but after a year away, I have returned to LTISD! I'm excited to be back home and looking forward to a great year in my new role!

I love all things middle school...the wacky, the weird, the awkward. Folks in the middle have their own brilliance, despite the oil, hormones, and strange smells. They are my tribe, and I adore them.
